چکیده

On the example of monolayer manganites we show that the theoretical ideas developed long ago along the derivation of the spin t–J model from the Hubbard model are nowadays very helpful in strongly correlated oxides with partly filled degenerate orbitals. We analyze a realistic orbital t–J model for eg electrons in La1−xSr1+xMnO4 monolayer manganites, and discuss the evolution of spin and orbital correlations under increasing doping by performing exact diagonalization of finite clusters, with electronic kinetic energy determined self-consistently at finite temperature by classical Monte Carlo for t2g spins. Several experimental results are reproduced. Spin t–J model. – A new perspective to treat strongly correlated electrons was opened by the derivation of the spin t–J model three decades ago [1]. We argue that this derivation opened new routes to understand the complex magnetic and superconducting instabilities in the Hubbard model, and proved to be a very useful paradigm in strongly correlated electron systems. At that time it was already realized that the Hubbard model,

Microscopic modelling of doped manganites

Colossal magneto-resistance manganites are characterised by a complex interplay of charge, spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom. Formulating microscopic models for these compounds aims at meeting to conflicting objectives: sufficient simplification without excessive restrictions on the phase space. We give a detailed introduction to the electronic structure of manganites and derive a mi...

Stripes induced by orbital ordering in layered manganites.

Spin-charge-orbital ordered structures in doped layered manganites are investigated using an orbital-degenerate double-exchange model tightly coupled to Jahn-Teller distortions. In the ferromagnetic phase, unexpected diagonal stripes at x = 1/m ( m = integer) are observed, as in recent experiments. These stripes are induced by the orbital degree of freedom, which forms a staggered pattern in th...

Spin and orbital Ti magnetism at LaMnO3/SrTiO3 interfaces.

In systems with strong electron-lattice coupling, such as manganites, orbital degeneracy is lifted, causing a null expectation value of the orbital magnetic moment. Magnetic structure is thus determined by spin-spin superexchange. In titanates, however, with much smaller Jahn-Teller distortions, orbital degeneracy might allow non-zero values of the orbital magnetic moment, and novel forms of fe...

Spin-wave softening and Hund's coupling in ferromagnetic manganites.

Using a one-orbital model of hole-doped manganites, we show with the help of the Holstein-Primakov transformation that finite Hund's coupling is responsible for the spin-wave softening in the ferromagnetic B-phase manganites. We obtain an analytical result for the spin-wave spectrum for [Formula: see text]. In the limit of infinite Hund's coupling, the spectrum is the conventional nearest-neigh...

Spin and orbital magnetic moments of Fe3O4.

We present measurements of the spin and orbital magnetic moments of Fe3O4 by using SQUID and magnetic circular dichroism in soft x-ray absorption. The measurements show that Fe3O4 has a noninteger spin moment, in contrast to its predicted half-metallic feature. Fe3O4 also exhibits a large unquenched orbital moment. Calculations using the local density approximation including the Hubbard U metho...
